What you need
A basic digital hygrometer that displays relative humidity and temperature is enough for this check. A model that records minimum and maximum values can be convenient, but a notebook or phone note works too. The goal is not laboratory precision. It is to compare the same room under similar conditions and find out whether moisture clears promptly or lingers.
Relative humidity, usually shown as RH, describes how much moisture the air holds compared with the maximum it could hold at the same temperature. Because warmer air can hold more moisture than cooler air, the RH number may change when the room warms or cools even if no new water is added. That is one reason temperature and timing belong in your notes.
1. Choose a representative location
Place the hygrometer where it can sample normal bathroom air without being hit by water or a concentrated plume of steam. A dry shelf or counter at roughly breathing height is often practical. Keep it stable and follow the device maker's placement instructions.
- Keep it outside the tub and shower splash zones.
- Do not place it directly above a radiator, heater or warm appliance.
- Avoid pressing it against a cold exterior wall, window or mirror.
- Keep it away from the exhaust grille, open window and door gap.
- Do not move it between readings unless you are deliberately testing locations.
A reading beside the shower may exaggerate the room-wide peak, while a reading directly under a strong exhaust grille may make the bathroom appear to recover faster than the rest of the space. Consistent placement produces the most useful comparison.
2. Record a baseline before bathing
Let the meter sit in position long enough to settle before you record the first value. Note the relative humidity, temperature, time and any conditions that may affect the result: door open or closed, fan on or off, window position and whether damp towels are already in the room.
Repeat the baseline on more than one day if possible. Bathrooms naturally follow weather, heating and air-conditioning changes elsewhere in the home. A repeatable range is more informative than treating one morning's reading as a permanent normal.
3. Run a consistent shower test
Use the bathroom normally, but try to keep the comparison fair. Record approximately how long the shower ran, whether the water was unusually hot and which ventilation settings were used. Do not handle the hygrometer with wet hands or place an electrical device where it could be splashed.
Take a reading soon after the shower ends without standing in front of the meter or breathing directly onto it. This is your post-shower reference, not a pass-or-fail score. A brief humidity rise is expected when hot water adds moisture to the room.
4. Track the recovery, not just the peak
Continue recording at regular intervals, such as every 10 or 15 minutes, until the reading moves back toward the pre-shower range. Keep the fan, door and window conditions consistent with the routine you are testing. If you change something halfway through, note the time.
The recovery pattern can answer more useful questions than the highest number alone:
- Does humidity begin falling after the shower stops?
- How long does it take to approach the room's baseline?
- Do mirrors, windows or walls remain wet after the RH reading starts to fall?
- Does the room stay elevated even on days when no one showers?
- Does running the exhaust fan longer produce a repeatable improvement?
5. Interpret the pattern carefully
General indoor-humidity guidance often discusses a moderate range rather than one universal target, and bathrooms commonly rise above the home's background level during bathing. Climate, season, room temperature and building design all affect the number. Instead of reacting to a single peak, look for sustained elevation, slow recovery and repeated surface condensation.
A fast rise followed by a steady return toward baseline suggests a short moisture event that the room is clearing. A reading that stays high for a long period, climbs when the bathroom is unused or accompanies persistent wet surfaces deserves a closer look at airflow, damp materials and possible leaks.
6. Compare one change at a time
Once you have a baseline test, repeat the same routine while changing one variable. You might run a functioning exhaust fan for longer, clear a blocked grille, leave the intended makeup-air path unobstructed or remove standing water with a squeegee. Keep shower duration, meter location and reading intervals as similar as practical.
If several changes happen at once, you may improve the room but you will not know which change mattered. A simple table makes the comparison easier:

Common measurement mistakes
- Chasing one peak: Short steam exposure near the meter can create a dramatic but unrepresentative reading.
- Changing the location: Moving the device makes before-and-after tests harder to compare.
- Ignoring temperature: RH can shift as the air warms or cools.
- Testing different routines: A five-minute shower and a twenty-minute shower are not equivalent moisture loads.
- Assuming noise means airflow: A running exhaust fan may still have weak airflow or an unsuitable duct route.
- Forgetting device limits: Low-cost hygrometers can differ from one another. Use one device consistently and follow its calibration guidance if provided.
What to do with your results
If the room returns toward baseline and surfaces dry promptly, keep the routine that works. If humidity and visible moisture linger, use the pattern to investigate the ventilation path and drying habits before buying equipment. Compare an exhaust fan and dehumidifier only after you understand whether the problem is a short shower event, weak outdoor exhaust or broader indoor humidity.
